were favourably received by the consuls察 and swore submission to the
Roman yoke察with whatever severity it might be imposed。
The Romans察therefore察came with a powerful army to the assistance
of the Britons察 and having appointed over them a ruler察 and settled the
government察returned to Rome此and this took place alternately during the
space of three hundred and forty´eight years。 The Britons察however察from
the oppression of the empire察again massacred The Roman deputies察and
again petitioned for succour。 Once more the Romans undertook the
government of the Britons察and assisted them in repelling their neighbours察
and察 after having exhausted the country of its gold察 silver察 brass察 honey察
and costly vestments察and having besides received rich gifts察they returned
in great triumph to Rome。

assassination of their rulers察 and the victory of Maximus察 who slew
Gratian察and the termination of the Roman power in Britain察they were in
alarm forty years。
Vortigern then reigned in Britain。 In his time察the natives had cause of
dread察not only from the inroads of the Scots and Picts察but also from the
Romans察 and their apprehensions of Ambrosius。* * These words relate
evidently to some cause of dispute between the Romans察Ambrosius察and
Vortigern。 Vortigern is said to have been sovereign of the Dimetae察 and
Ambrosius son to the king of the Damnonii。 The latter was half a Roman
by descent察 and naturally supported the Roman interest此 the former was
entirely a Briton察and as naturally seconded by the original Britons。
In the meantime察 three vessels察 exiled from Germany察 arrived in

32。 At that time St。 Germanus察distinguished for his numerous virtues察
came to preach in Britain此 by his ministry many were saved察 but many
likewise died unconverted。 Of the various miracles which God enabled
him to perform察I shall here mention only a few此I shall first advert to that
concerning an iniquitous and tyrannical king察 named Benlli。* The holy
man察 informed of his wicked conduct察 hastened to visit him察 for the
purpose of remonstrating him。 When the man of God察with his attendants察
arrived at the gate of the city察 they were respectfully received by the
keeper of it察who came out and saluted them。 Him they commissioned to
communicate their intention to the king察 who returned a harsh answer察
declaring察 with an oath察 that although they remained there a year察 they
should not enter the city。 While waiting for an answer察the evening came
on察 and they knew not where to go。 At length察 came one of the king's
servants察 who bowing himself before the man of God察 announced the
words of the tyrant察inviting them察at the same time察to his own house察to
which they went察and were kindly received。 It happened察however察that he
had no cattle察 except one cow and a calf察 the latter of which察 urged by
generous hospitality to his guests察he killed察dressed and set before them。
But holy St。 Germanus ordered his companions not to break a bone of the
calf察and察the next morning察it was found alive uninjured察and standing by
its mother。 * King of Powys。 V。R。 Benli in the district of Ial in

33。 Early the same day察 they again went to the gate of the city察 to
solicit audience of the wicked king察and察whilst engaged in fervent prayer
they were waiting for admission察 a man察 covered with sweat察 came out察
and prostrated himself before them。 Then St。 Germanus察addressing him察
said ;Dost thou believe in the Holy Trinity拭─To which the man having
replied察 I do believe察─he baptized察and kissed him察saying察 Go in peace察
within this hour thou shalt die此the angels of God are waiting for thee in
the air察 with them thou shalt ascent to that God in whom thou has
believed。此He察 overjoyed察 entered the city察and being met by the prefect察
was seized察 bound察 and conducted before the tyrant察 who having passed

sentence upon him察he was immediately put to death察for it was a law of
this wicked king察 that whoever was not at his labour before sun´rising
should be beheaded in the citadel。 In the meantime察St。 Germanus察with his
attendants察 waited the whole day before the gate察 without obtaining
admission to the tyrant。
34。 The man above´mentioned察 however察 remained with them。 ;Take
care察─ said St。 Germanus to him察 that none of your friends remain this
night within these walls。 Upon this he hastily entered the city察brought out
his nine sons察and with them retired to the house where he had exercised
such generous hospitality。 Here St。 Germanus ordered them to continue察
fasting察 and when the gates were shut察 Watch察─ said he察 and whatever
shall happen in the citadel察 turn not thither your eyes察 but pray without
ceasing察and invoke the protection of the true God。; And察behold察early in
the night察fire fell from heaven察and burned the city察together with all those
who were with the tyrant察 so that not one escaped察 and that citadel has
never been rebuilt even to this day。
35。 The following day察the hospitable man who had been converted by
the preaching of St。 Germanus察 was baptized察 with his sons察 and all the
inhabitants of that part of the country察 and St。 Germanus blessed him察
saying察 a king shall not be wanting of thy seed for ever。; The name of this
person is Catel Drunlue* ;from hence´ forward thou shalt be a king all the
days of thy life。; Thus was fulfilled the prophecy of the Psalmist此 He
raiseth up the poor out of the dust察 and lifteth up the needy out of the
dunghill。; And agreeably to the prediction of St。 Germanus察fr
