lipped。

    ORGON Poor man

DORINE At evening she had nausea And could't touch a single thing

for supper察Her headache still was so severe。

    ORGON And how About Tartuffe拭

DORINE He supped alone察 before her察 And unctuously ate up two

partridges察As well as half a leg o' mutton察deviled。

    ORGON Poor man

DORINE All night she couldn't get a wink Of sleep察the fever racked

her so察and we Had to sit up with her till daylight。

    ORGON How About Tartuffe拭

DORINE Gently inclined to slumber察He left the table察went into his

room察 Got himself straight into a good warm bed察 And slept quite

undisturbed until next morning。

    ORGON Poor man

DORINE At last she let us all persuade her察And got up courage to be

bled察and then She was relieved at once。

    ORGON And how about Tartuffe拭

DORINE He plucked up courage properly察 Bravely entrenched his

soul against all evils察And to replace the blood that she had lost察He drank

at breakfast four huge draughts of wine。

    ORGON Poor man

DORINE So now they both are doing well察And I'll go straightway and

inform my mistress How pleased you are at her recovery。

                     SCENE VI ORGON察CLEANTE

CLEANTE Brother察she ridicules you to your face察And I察though I

don't want to make you angry察Must tell you candidly that she's quite right。

Was such infatuation ever heard of拭And can a man to´day have charms to

make you Forget all else察 relieve his poverty察 Give him a home察 and

then 。 。 。 拭

ORGON Stop there察 good brother察You do not know the man you're

speaking of。

CLEANTE Since you will have it so察I do not know him察But after all察

to tell what sort of man He is 。 。 。

ORGON Dear brother察you'd be charmed to know him察Your raptures

over him would have no end。 He is a man 。 。 。 who 。 。 。 ah 。 。 in fact 。 。 。a

man Whoever does his will察knows perfect peace察And counts the whole

world else察as so much dung。 His converse has transformed me quite察he

weans My heart from every friendship察 teaches me To have no love for

anything on earth察And I could see my brother察children察mother察And wife察

all die察and never carea snap。

CLEANTE Your feelings are humane察I must say察brother

ORGON Ah If you'd seen him察as I saw him first察You would have

loved him just as much as I。 He came to church each day察with contrite

mien察Kneeled察on both knees察right opposite my place察And drew the eyes

of all the congregation察 To watch the fervour of his prayers to heaven察

With deep´drawn sighs and great ejaculations察He humbly kissed the earth

at every moment察And when I left the church察he ran before me To give me

holy water at the door。 I learned his poverty察 and who he was察 By

questioning his servant察 who is like him察And gave him gifts察 but in his

modesty He always wanted to return a part。 ;It is too much察─he'd say察 too

much by half察I am not worthy of your pity。; Then察When I refused to take

it back察he'd go察Before my eyes察and give it to the poor。 At length heaven

bade me take him to my home察And since that day察all seems to prosper

here。 He censures everything察and for my sake He even takes great interest

in my wife察 He lets me know who ogles her察 and seems Six times as

jealous as I am myself。 You'd not believe how far his zeal can go此He calls

                                               14

himself a sinner just for trifles察The merest nothing is enough to shock him察

So much so察 that the other day I heard him Accuse himself for having察

while at prayer察In too much anger caught and killed a flea。

CLEANTE Zounds察 brother察 you are mad察 I think Or else You're

making sport of me察with such a speech。 What are you driving at with all

this nonsense 。 。 。 拭

ORGON Brother察 your language smacks of atheism察 And I suspect

your soul's a little tainted Therewith。 I've preached to you a score of times

That you'll draw down some judgment on your head。

CLEANTE That is the usual strain of all your kind察They must have

every one as blind as they。 They call you atheist if you have good eyes察

And if you don't adore their vain grimaces察You've neither faith nor care

for sacred things。 No察no察such talk can't frighten me察I know What I am

saying察 heaven sees my heart。 We're not the dupes of all your canting

mummers察There are false heroesand false devotees察And as true heroes

never are the ones Who make much noise about their deeds of honour察Just

so true devotees察whom we should follow察Are not the ones who make so

much vain show。 What Will you find no difference between Hypocrisy

and genuine devoutness拭And will you treat them both alike察and pay The

self´same honour both to masks and faces Set artifice beside sincerity察

Confuse the semblance with reality察Esteem a phantom like a living person察

And counterfeit as good as honest coin拭 Men察 for the most part察 are

strange creatures察truly You never find them keep the golden mean察The

limits of good sense察too narrow for them察Must always be passed by察in

each direction察They often spoil the noblest things察because They go too

far察and push them to extremes。 I merely say this by the way察good brother。

ORGON You are the sole expounder of the doctrine察Wisdom shall die

with you察 no doubt察 good brother察 You are the only wise察 the sole

enlightened察The oracle察the Cato察of our age。 All men察compared to you察

are downright fools。

CLEANTE I'm not the sole expounder of the doctrine察And wisdom

shall not die with me察good brother。 But this I know察though it be all my

knowledge察That there's a difference 'twixt false and true。 And as I find no

kind of hero more To be admired than men of true religion察Nothing more

                                               15

noble or more beautiful Than is the holy zeal of true devoutness察Just so I

think there's naught more odious Than whited sepulchres of outward

unction察 Those barefaced charlatans察 those hireling zealots察 Whose

sacrilegious察 treacherous pretence Deceives at will察 and with impunity

Makes mockery of all that men hold sacred察Men who察enslaved to selfish

interests察Make trade and merchandise of godliness察And try to purchase

influence and office With false eye´rollings and affected raptures察Those

men察I say察who with uncommon zeal Seek their own fortunes on the road

to heaven察Who察skilled in prayer察have always much to ask察And live at

court to preach retirement察 Who reconcile religion with their vices察Are

quick to anger察vengeful察faithless察tricky察And察to destroy a man察will have

the boldness To call their private grudge the cause of heaven察All the more

dangerous察since in their anger They use against us weapons men revere察

And since they make the world applaud their passion察And seek to stab us

with a sacred sword。 There are too many of this canting kind。 Still察 the

sincere are easy to distinguish察And many splendid patterns may be found察

In our own time察before our very eyes Look at Ariston察Periandre察Oronte察

Alcidamas察 Clitandre察 and Polydore察 No one denies their claim to true

religion察 Yet they're no braggadocios of virtue察 They do not make

insufferable display察And their religion's human察 tractable察 They are not

always judging all our actions察They'd think such judgment savoured of

presumption察And察leaving pride of words to other men察'Tis by their deeds

alone they censure ours。 Evil appearances find little credit With them察they

even incline to think the best Of others。 No caballers察no intriguers察They

mind the business of their own right living。 They don't attack a sinner

tooth and nail察For sin's the only object of their hatred察Nor are they over´

zealous to attempt Far more in heaven's behalf than heaven would have

'em。 That is my kind of man察 that is true living察
