many     dead   unto   the  journeying    wave�察  �The   helpless   nurslings   of  the 

cradling   seas�察  �Not   they   who   doomed   by   infallible   decrees   Unnumbered 

man to the innumerable grave。 But those who slay Are fathers。 Theirs are 

armies。 Death is theirs�察�The death of innocences and despairs�察�The dying 

of the golden and the grey。 The sentence�察�when these speak it�察�has no Nay。 

And she who slays is she who bears�察�who bears。

               THE MODERN MOTHER 



     Oh    what    a   kiss  With    filial  passion    overcharged      is  this�  �To    this 

misgiving breast The child runs�察�as a child ne'er ran to rest Upon the light 

heart and the unoppressed。 

     Unhoped�察      �unsought�     �A   little  tenderness�察   �this  mother     thought    The 

utmost   of   her   meed   She   looked   for   gratitude�察  �content   indeed   With   thus 

much that her nine years' love had bought。 

     Nay�察�even with less。 This mother�察�giver of life�察�death�察�peace�察�distress�察�

Desired   ah�   �not   so   much   Thanks   as   forgiveness�察  �and   the   passing   touch 

Expected�察�and the slight�察�the brief caress。 

     Oh   filial   light   Strong   in   these   childish   eyes�察  �these   new�察  �these   bright 

Intelligible   stars�   �Their   rays   Are   near   the   constant   earth�察  �guides   in   the 

maze�察�Natural�察�true�察�keen in this dusk of days。

              WEST WIND IN WINTER 



    Another   day   awakes。   And   who      ´   Changing   the   worldis   this�拭 �He 

comes   at   whiles�察  �the   Winter   through�察  �West   Wind�   �I   would   not   miss   His 

sudden tryst�此�the long�察�the new Surprises of his kiss。 

    Vigilant�察�I make haste to close With him who comes my way。 I go to 

meet him as he goes�察�I know his note�察�his lay�察�His colour and his morning 

rose�察�And I confess his day。 

    My window waits�察�at dawn I hark His call�察�at morn I meet His haste 

around the tossing park And down the softened street�察�The gentler light is 

his�察�the dark�察�The greyhe turns it sweet。 

     So too�察�so too�察�do I confess My poet when he sings。 He rushes on my 

mortal guess With his immortal things。 I feel�察�I know him。 On I press ´ He 

finds me 'twixt his wings。

    The    colour   of  the  electric  lights  has  a  strange  effect  in  giving  a 

complementary        tint  to  the  air  in   the  early   evening。ESSAY       ON 

LONDON。 

    O�察�Heavenly colour� �London town Has blurred it from her skies�察�And 

hooded in an earthly brown�察�Unheaven'd the city lies。 No longer standard´ 

like this hue Above the broad   road flies�察  �Nor does the  narrow street the 

blue Wear�察�slender pennon´wise。 

    But   when   the   gold   and   silver   lamps   Colour   the   London   dew�察  �And�察�

misted by the winter damps�察�The shops shine bright anew ´ Blue comes to 

earth�察�it walks the street�察�It dyes the wide air through�察�A mimic sky about 

their feet�察�The throng go crowned with blue。

    Brief�察�on a flying night�察�From the shaken tower�察�A flock of bells take 

flight�察�And go with the hour。 

    Like birds from the cote to the gales�察�AbruptO hark� �A fleet of bells 

set sails�察�And go to the dark。 

    Sudden the cold airs swing。 Alone�察�aloud�察�A verse of bells takes wing 

And flies with the cloud。

a song�察�The ages long�察�the ages long。 

    Even as the cold Keen winter grows not old�察�As childhood is so fresh�察�

foreseen�察�And spring in the familiar green�察�

    Sudden as sweet Come the expected feet。 All joy is young�察�and new all

    Along   the   graceless   grass   of   town   They   rake   the   rows   of   red   and 

brown�察  �Dead   leaves�察  �unlike   the   rows   of   hay�察  �Delicate�察  �neither   gold   nor 

grey�察�Raked long ago and far away。 

    A narrow silence in the park�察�Between the lights a narrow dark。 One 

street rolls on the north�察�and one�察�Muffled�察�upon the south doth run。 Amid 

the mist the work is done。 

    A futile crop�察�for it the fire Smoulders�察�and�察�for a stack�察�a pyre。 So go 

the town's lives on the breeze�察�Even as the sheddings of the trees�察�Bosom 

nor barn is filled with these。
