ed。 Then we saw ;The Cardinall察─。A tragi´comedy by James Shirley。А a tragedy I had never seen before察nor is there any great matter in it。 The company that come in with me into the box察were all Frenchmen that could speak no English察but Lord what sport they made to ask a pretty lady that they got among them that understood both French and English to make her tell them what the actors said。
th。 I to church察and this day the parson has got one to read with a surplice on。 I suppose himself will take it up hereafter察for a cunning fellow he is as any of his coate。
th。 To White Hall with Mr。 Coventry察and so to my Lord Sandwich's lodgings察but my Lord not within察being at a ball this night with the King at my Lady Castlemaine's at next door。
th。 To my Lord Sandwich's察and among other things to my extraordinary joy察he did tell me how much I was beholding to the Duke of York察who did yesterday of his own accord tell him that he did thank him for one person brought into the Navy察naming myself察and much more to my commendation察which is the greatest comfort and encouragement that ever I had in my life察and do owe it all to Mr。 Coventry's goodness and ingenuity。 At night by coach to my Lord's again察but he is at White Hall with the King察before whom the puppet plays I saw this summer in Covent´garden are acted this night。
th。 To the office察and I bid them adieu for a week察having the Duke's leave got me by Mr。 Coventry。 To whom I did give thanks for my news yesterday of the Duke's words to my Lord Sandwich concerning me察which he took well察and do tell me so freely his love and value of me察that my mind is now in as great a state quiet as to my interest in the office察as I could ever wish to be。 Between one and two o'clock got on horseback at our back gate察with my man Will。 with me察both well´mounted on two grey horses。 We got to Ware before night察and so I resolved to ride on to Puckeridge察which we did察though the way was bad察and the evening dark before we got thither察by help of company riding before us察among others察a gentleman that took up at the same inn察his name Mr。 Brian察with whom I supped察and was very good company察and a scholar。 He tells me that it is believed the Queene is with child察for that the coaches are ordered to ride very easily through the streets。
th。 Up察and between eight and nine mounted again察and so rid to Cambridge察the way so good that I got very well thither察and set up at the Beare此 and there my cosen Angier come to me察and I must needs to his house察and there found Dr。 Fairbrother察with a good dinner。 But察above all察he telling me that this day there is a Congregation for the choice of some officers in the University察he after dinner gets me a gowne察cap察and hoode察and carries me to the Schooles察where Mr。 Pepper察my brother's tutor察and this day chosen Proctor察did appoint a M。A。 to lead me into the Regent House察where I sat with them察and did vote by subscribing papers thus此 Ego Samuel Pepys eligo Magistrum Bernardum Skelton察。and which was more strange察my old schoolfellow and acquaintance察and who afterwards did take notice of me察and we spoke together撮 alterum e taxatoribus hujus academiae in annum sequentem。; The like I did for one Briggs察for the other Taxor察and for other officers察as the Vice´Proctor察。Mr。 Covell for Mr。 Pepper察and which was the gentleman that did carry me into the Regent House。
th。 To Brampton察where I found my father and two brothers察my mother and sister。
th。 To church察where I saw察among others察Mrs。 Hanbury察a proper lady察and Mr。 Bernard and his Lady察with her father察my late Lord St。 John察who looks now like a very plain grave man。 Oliver St。 John察one of Cromwell's Lords察and Chief Justice察and therefore察after the Restoration察properly called ;My LATE Lord。; His third daughter察Elizabeth察by his second wife察daughter of Henry Cromwell of Upwood察Esq。察uncle to the Protector察married Mr。 John Bernard察who became a Baronet on the death of his father察Sir Robert察in 1666 and was M。P。 for Huntingdon。 Ob。 1689。
th。 To the Court察and did sue out a recovery察and cut off the entayle察and my brothers there察to join therein。 And my father and I admitted to all the lands察he for life察and I for myself and my heirs in reversion。 I did with most compleat joy of mind go from the Court with my father home察and away察calling in at Hinchingbroke察and taking leave in three words of my lady察and the young ladies察and so by moonlight to Cambridge察whither we come at about nine o'clock察and took up at the Beare。
th。 Showed Mr。 Cooke King's College Chapel察Trinity College察and St。 John's College Library察and that being done察to our inn again察where I met Dr。 Fairbrother。 He told us how the room we were in察was the room where Cromwell and his associated officers did begin to plot and act their mischiefs in these counties。 Took leave of all察and begun our journey about nine o'clock察the roads being every where but bad察but finding our horses in good case察we even made shift to reach London察though both of us very weary。 Found all things well察there happening nothing since our going to my discontent in the least degree察which do also please me察that I cannot but bless God for my journey察observing a whole course of successe from the beginning to the end of it。
th。 I hear Sir H。 Bennet Created Baron of Arlington 1663察and Viscount Thetford and Earl of Arlington察1672察he was also K。G。察and Chamberlain to the King。 Ob。 1685。А is made Secretary of State in Sir Edward Nicholas's stead察not known whether by consent or not。
th。 To Creed's chamber察and there sat a good while and drank chocolate。 Here I am told how things go at Court察that the young men get uppermost察and the old serious lords are out of favour察that Sir H。 Bennet察being brought into Sir Edward Nicholas's place察Sir Charles Barkeley is made Privy Purse察a most vicious person察and one whom Mr。 Pierce察the surgeon察did tell me that he offered his wife 300l。 per annum to be his mistress。 He also told me察that none in Court hath more the King's eare now than Sir Charles Barkeley察and Sir R。 Bennet察and my Lady Castlemaine察whose interest now is as great as ever此 and that Mrs。 Haslerigge察the great beauty察is now brought to bed察and lays it to the King or the Duke of York。 He tells me also察that my Lord St。 Albans is like to be Lord Treasurer此 all which things do trouble me much。
th Lord's´day。 Put on my first new lace´band察and so neat it is察that I am resolved my great expence shall be lace´bands察and it will set off any thing else the more。 I am sorry to hear that the news of the selling of Dunkirke is taken so generally ill察as I find it is among the merchants察and other things察as removal of officers at Court察good for worse察and all things else made much worse in their report among people than they are。 And this night察I know not upon what ground察the gates of the City ordered to be all shut察and double guards every where。 Indeed I do find every body's spirit very full of trouble此 and the things of the Court and Council very ill taken察so as to be apt to appear in bad colours察if there should ever be a beginning of trouble察which God forbid
th。 In Sir J。 Minnes's coach with him and Sir W。 Batten to White Hall察where now the Duke is come again to lodge此 and to Mr。 Coventry's little new chamber there。 And by and by up to the Duke察who was making himself ready察and there young Killigrew did so commend ;The Villaine察─a new play made by Tom Porter察and acted only on Saturday at the Duke's house察as if there never had been any such play come upon the stage。 The same yesterday was told me by Captn。 Ferrers察and this morning afterwards by Dr。 Clarke察who saw it。 After I had done with the Duke察with Commissioner Pett to Mr。 Lilly's察the great painter察who come forth to us察but believing that I come to bespeak a picture察he prevented it察by telling us察that he should察not be at leisure these three weeks察which methinks is a rare thing。 And then to see in what pomp his table was laid for himself to go to dinner察and here察among other pictures察saw the so much desired by me picture of my Lady Castlemaine察which is a most blessed picture察and one that I must have a copy of。 From thence I took my wife by coach to the Duke's house察there was the house full of company此 but whether it was in overexpecting or what察I know not察but I was never less pleased with a play in my life。 Though there was good singing and dancing察yet no fancy in the play。
st。 By water with Mr。 Smith察to Mr。 Lechmore察the Councellor at the Temple察。Nicholas Lechmere察knighted and made a Baron of the Exchequer察1689。 Ob。 1701。А about Field's business察and he tells me plainly that there being a verdict against me察there is no help for it察but it must proceed to judgement。 It is 30l。 damage to me for my joining with others in committing Field to prison察as being not Justices of the Peace in the City察though in Middlesex察which troubled me察and I hope the King will make it good to us。
th。 Mr。 Pierce察the chyrurgeon察tells me how ill things go at Court此 that the King do show no countenance to any that belong to the Queene察nor察above all察to such Eng
