31st。 To the Duke of York's playhouse察and saw ;Hamlet察─which we have not seen this year before察or more察and mightily pleased with it察but above all with Betterton察the best part察I believe that ever man acted。
SEPTEMBER 1察1668。 To the fair and there saw several sights察among others察the mare that tells money and many things to admiration。
2nd。 Fast´day for the burning of London strictly observed。
3rd。 To my bookseller's for ;Hobbs's Leviathan察─which is now mightily called for此 and what was heretofore sold for 8s。 I now give 24s。 at the second hand察and is sold for 30s。 it being a book the Bishops will not let be printed again。
4th。 To the fair to see the play ;Bartholomew´fair察─with puppets。 and it is an excellent play察the more I see it察the more I love the wit of it察only the business of abusing the Puritans begins to grow stale and of no use察they being the people that at last will be found the wisest。 This night Knipp tells us that there is a Spanish woman lately come over that pretends to sing as well as Mrs。 Knight察。A celebrated singer and favourite of Charles Il。 Her portrait was engraved in 1749 by Faber察after Kneller。 There is in Waller's Poems a song察sung by Mrs。 Knight to the Queen on her birthday。А both of whom I must endeavour to hear。
5th。 To Mr。 Hales's new house察where I find he hath finished my wife's hand察which is better than the other。 And here I find Harris's picture done in his habit of ;Henry the Fifth察─mighty like a player察but I do not think the picture near so good as any yet he hath made for me察however察it is pretty well。
7th。 With my Lord Brouncker who was this day in unusual manner merry察I believe with drink察J。 Minnes察and W。 Pen to Bartholomew´fair察and there saw the dancing mare again which to´ day I find to act much worse than the other day察she forgetting many things察which her master beat her for察and was mightily vexed撮 and then the dancing of the ropes察and also the little stage´play察which is very ridiculous。
8th。 This day I received so earnest an invitation again from Roger Pepys to come to Stourbridge´fair察that I resolve to let my wife go察which she shall do the next week。
9th。 To the Duke of Richmond's lodgings by his desire by letter yesterday。 I find him at his lodgings in the little building in the bowling´green at White Hall察that was begun to be built by Captain Rolt。 They are fine rooms。 I did hope to see his lady察but she察I hear察is in the country。 His business was about his yacht察and he seems a mighty good´natured man察and did presently write me a warrant for a doe from Cobham察when the season comes察buck season being past。 I shall make much of this acquaintance察that I may live to see his lady near。 Thence to Westminster察to Sir R。 Long's office察and going察met Mr。 George Montagu察who talked and complimented me mightily察and a long discourse I had with him此 who察for news察tells me for certain that Trevor do come to be Secretary at Michaelmas察and that Morrice goes out察and察he believes察without any compensation。 He tells me that now Buckingham do rule all察and the other day察in the King's journey he is now in察at Bagshot and that way察he caused Prince Rupert's horses to be turned out of an inne察and caused his own to be kept there察which the Prince complained of to the King察and the Duke of York seconded the complaint察but the King did over´rule it for Buckingham察by which there are high displeasures among them此 and Buckingham and Arlington rule all。 To White Hall察where Brouncker察W。 Pen察and I attended the Commissioners of the Treasury about the victualling contract察where high words between Sir Thomas Clifford and us察and myself more particularly察who told him that something察that he said was told him about this business察was a flat untruth。 However察we went on to our business in the examination of the draught察and so parted察and I vexed at what happened。
13th Lord's day。 By coach to St。 James's察and met察to my wish察the Duke of York and Mr。 Wren此 and understand the Duke of York hath received answers from Brouncker察W。 Pen察and J。 Minnes察and as soon as he saw me察he bid Mr。 Wren read them over with me。 So having no opportunity of talk with the Duke of York察and Mr。 Wren some business to do察he put them into my hands like an idle companion察to take home with me before himself had read them察which do give me great opportunity of altering my answer察if there was cause。 After supper made my wife to read them all over察wherein she is mighty useful to me此 and I find them all evasions察and in many things false察and in few to the full purpose。 Little said reflective on me察though W。 Pen and J。 Minnes do mean me in one or two places察and J。 Minnes a little more plainly would lead the Duke of York to question the exactness of my keeping my records察but all to no purpose。 My mind is mightily pleased by this察if I can but get time to have a copy taken of them for my future use察but I must return them tomorrow。 So to bed。
14th。 Up betimes察and walked to the Temple察and stopped察viewing the Exchange and Paul's and St。 Fayth's察where strange how the very sight of the stones falling from the top of the steeple do make me sea´sick But no hurt察I hear察hath yet happened in all this work of the steeple察which is very much。 So from the Temple I by coach to St。 James's察where I find Sir W。 Pen and Lord Anglesy察who delivered this morning his answer to the Duke of York察but I could not see it。 But after being above with the Duke of York察I down with Mr。 Wren察and he and I read all over that I had察and I expounded them to him察and did so order it that I had them home with me察so that I shall to my heart's wish be able to take a copy of them。 After dinner I by water to White Hall察and there察with the Cofferer and Sir Stephen Fox察attended the Commissioners of the Treasury about bettering our fund察and are promised it speedily。
15th。 To the King's playhouse to see a new play察acted but yesterday察a translation out of French by Dryden察called ;The Ladys a la Mode此─ so mean a thing as察when they come to say it would be acted again to´morrow察both he that said it Beeson Probably Beeston察who had been Manager of the Cockpit Theatre。В and the pit fell a´laughing。
18th。 Walking it to the Temple察and in my way observe that the stockes are now pulled quite down此 and it will make the coming into Cornhill and Lumber´street mighty noble。 I stopped too at察Paul's察and there did go into St。 Fayth's church察and also in the body of the west part of the church察and do see a hideous sight of the walls of the church ready to fall察that I was in fear as long as I was in it察and here I saw the great vaults underneath the body of the church。 No hurt察I hear察is done yet察since their going to pull down the church and steeple察but one man察one Mound察this week fell from the top of the roof of the east end that stands next the steeple察and there broke himself all to pieces。 It is pretty here to see how the late church was but a case wrought over the old church察for you may see the very old pillars standing whole within the wall of this。 When I come to St。 James's察I find the Duke of York gone with the King to see the muster of the Guards in Hide Park察and their Colonell察the Duke of Monmouth察to take his command this day of the King's Life´guard察by surrender of my Lord Gerard。 So I took a hackney´ coach and saw it all此 and indeed it was mighty noble察and their firing mighty fine察and the Duke of Monmouth in mighty rich clothes察but the well ordering of the men I understand not。 Here察among a thousand coaches that were there察I saw and spoke to Mrs。 Pierce此 and by and by Mr。 Wren hunts me out and gives me my Lord Anglesy's answer to the Duke of York's letter此 where察I perceive察he do do what he can to hurt me察by bidding the Duke of York call for my books此 but this will do me all the right in the world察and yet I am troubled at it。 So away out of the Park察and home察and there Mr。 Gibson and I to dinner此 and all the afternoon with him writing over anew and a little altering my answer to the Duke of York察which I have not yet delivered察and so have the opportunity of doing it after seeing all their answers察though this do give me occasion to alter very little。 This done察he to write it over察and I to the office察where late察and then home察and he had finished it。 And then he to read to me the Life of Archbishop Laud察wrote by Dr。 Heylin察which is a shrewd book察but that which I believe will do the Bishops in general no great good察but hurt察it pleads so much for Popery。
18th。 To St。 James's察and there took a turn or two in the Park察and then up to the Duke of York察and there had opportunity of delivering my answer to his late letter察which he did not read察but give to Mr。 Wren察as looking on it as a thing I needed not have done察but only that I might not give occasion to the rest to suspect my communication with the Duke of York against them。 So now I am at rest in that matter察and shall be more when my copies are finished of their answers。
19th。 To the King's playhouse察and there saw ;The Silent Woman察─the best comedy察I think察that ever was wrote此 and sitting by Shadwell Thomas Shadwell察the dramatic writ
