he master of the house did get us a lodging over the way察at a private house察his landlord's察mighty neat and fine此 and there supped察and so bed。

th。 I hear that Colbert the French Ambassador is come察and hath been at Court INGOGNITO。 When he hath his audience察I know not。

th。 Waited on the Duke of York察and both by him and several of the Privy´council察beyond expectation察I find that my going to Sir Thomas Allen was looked upon as a thing necessary察and I have got some advantage by it among them。

th。 To my Lord Arlington's house察the first time since he came thither察at Goring´house察a very fine察noble place察and there he received me in sight of several Lords with great respect。 I did give him an account of my journey。 And here察while I waited for him a little察my Lord Orrery took notice of me察and begun discourse of hangings察and of the improvement of shipping察I not thinking that he knew me察but did then discover it was a mighty compliment of my abilities and ingenuity察which I am mighty proud of察and he do speak most excellently。 To Cooper's察where I spent all the afternoon with my wife and girl察seeing him make an end of her picture察which he did to my great content察though not so great as I confess I expected察being not satisfied in the greatness of the resemblance察nor in the blue garment察but it is most certainly a most rare piece of work as to the painting。 He hath 30l。 for his work察and the chrystal and case and gold case comes to 8l。 3s。 4d。察and which I sent him this night察that I might be out of his debt。

th。 The Parliament met enough to adjourne to the 10th of November next。 At the office all the afternoon till night察being mightily pleased with a trial I have made of the use of a tube´ spectacall of paper察tried with my right eye。 This day I hear that察to the great joy of the Non´conformists察the time is out of the Act against them察so that they may meet此 and they have declared that they will have a morning lecture up again察which is pretty strange察and they are connived at by the King every where察I hear察in the City and country。 This afternoon my wife and Mercer and Deb。 went with Pelling to see the gypsies at Lambeth察and have their fortunes told察but what they did察I did not enquire。

th。 Captain Cocke tells me that he hears for certain the Duke of York此 will lose the authority of an Admirall察and be governed by a Committee此 and all our office changed察only they are in dispute whether I shall continue or no察which puts new thoughts in me察but I know not whether to be glad or sorry。

th。 I with Mr。 Wren察by invitation察to Sir Stephen Fox's to dinner此 where the Cofferer and Sir Edward Savage察where many good stories of the antiquity and estates of many families at this day in Cheshire察and that part of the kingdom察more than what is on this side near London。 My Lady dining with us察a very good lady察and a family governed so nobly and neatly as do me good to see it。 Thence the Cofferer察Sir Stephen察and I to the Commissioners of the Treasury about business此 and so I up to the Duke of York察who enquired for what I had promised him察about my observations of the miscarriages of our office察and I told him he should have it next week察being glad he called for it察for I find he is concerned to do something察and to secure himself thereby察I believe此 for the world is labouring to eclipse him察I doubt察I mean the factious part of the Parliament。 The office met this afternoon as usual察and waited on him察where察among other things察he talked a great while of his intentions of going to Dover soon察to be sworn as Lord Warden察which is a matter of great ceremony and state。

th。 All the morning at my office with W。 Hewer察there drawing up my Report to the Duke of York察as I have promised察about the faults of this office。

th。 To Hamstead察to speak with the Atturny´generall察whom we met in the fields察by his old rout and house。 And after a little talk about our business of Ackeworth察went and saw the Lord Wotton's Henry de Kirkhoven察Lord of Denfleet in Holland察married Katherine widow of Henry Lord Stanhope察and daughter of Lord Wotton察and her second husband the person here mentioned察was created Lord Wotton察of Wotton in Kent察1651。А house Belsize House察pulled down long ago。А and garden察which is wonderfull fine此 too good for the house the gardens are察being indeed the most noble that ever I saw察and brave orange and lemon´trees。 Thence to Mr。 Chichly's by invitation察and there dined with Sir John察his father not coming home。 And while at dinner comes by the French Ambassador Colbert's mules the first I ever saw撮 with their sumpter´clothes mighty rich察and his coaches察he being to have his entry to´day此 but his things察though rich察are not new察supposed to be the same his brother had the other day at the treaty at Aix´la´Chapelle察in Flanders。

th。 Alone to the Park察but there were few coaches此 among the few there were our two great beauties察my Lady Castlemaine and Richmond察the first time I saw the latter since she had the small pox。 I had much pleasure to see them察but I thought they were strange one to another。

th。 To work till past twelve at night察that I might get my great letter to the Duke of York ready against to´morrow察which I shall do察to my great content。

st。 Up betimes察and with my people again to work察and finished all before noon此 and then I by water to White Hall察and there did tell the Duke of York that I had done察and he hath desired me to come to him at Sunday next in the afternoon察to read it over察by which I have more time to consider and correct it。 To St。 James's此 and by and by comes Monsieur Colbert the French Ambassador察to make his first visit to the Duke of York察and then to the Duchesse。 And I saw it此 a silly piece of ceremony察he saying only a few formal words。 A comely man察and in a black suit and cloak of silk察which is a strange fashion now it hath been so long left off。 This day I did first see the Duke of York's room of pictures of some Maids of Honour察done by Lilly此good察but not like。

nd。 To the 'Change察and thence home察and took London´bridge in my way察walking down Fish´street and Gracious´street察to see how very fine a descent they have now made down the hill察that it is become very easy and pleasant。

rd。 To church察and heard a good sermon of Mr。 Gifford's at our church察upon ;Seek ye first the kingdom of Heaven and its righteousness察and all things shall be added to you。; A very excellent and persuasive察good and moral sermon。 He showed察like a wise man察that righteousness is a surer moral way of being rich察than sin and villany。 After dinner to the office察Mr。 Gibson and I察to examine my letter to the Duke of York察which察to my great joy察I did very well by my paper tube察without pain to my eyes。 And I do mightily like what I have therein done察and did according to the Duke of York's order make haste to St。 James's察and about four o'clock got thither此 and there the Duke of York was ready expecting me察and did hear it all over with extraordinary content察and did give me many and hearty thanks察and in words the most expressive tell me his sense of my good endeavours察and that he would have a care of me on all occasions察and did with much inwardness tell me what was doing察suitable almost to what Captain Cocke tells me察of designs to make alterations in the Navy此 and is most open to me in them察and with utmost confidence desires my further advice on all occasions此 and he resolves to have my letter transcribed and sent forthwith to the office。 So with as much satisfaction as I could possibly or did hope for察and obligation on the Duke of York's side professed to me察I away。

th。 Up察and by water to St。 James's察and there with Mr。 Wren did discourse about my great letter察which the Duke of York hath given him察and he hath set it to be transcribed by Billings his man察whom察as be tells me察he can most confide in for secresy察and is much pleased with it察and earnest to have it be此 and he and I are like to be much together in the considering how to reform the office察and that by the Duke of York's command。 Thence I察mightily pleased with this success察away to the office察where all the morning察my head full of this business。 And it is pretty how Lord Brouncker this day did tell me how he hears that a design is on foot to remove us out of the office察and proposes that we two do agree to draw up a form of new constitution of the office察there to provide remedies for the evils we are now under察that so we may be beforehand with the world察which I agreed to察saying nothing of my design此 and the truth is察he is the best man of them all察and I would be glad next myself to save him察for as he deserves best察so I doubt he needs his place most。

th。 It is strange to see with what speed the people employed do pull down Paul's steeple察and with what ease此 it is said that it and the quire are to be taken down this year察and another church begun in the room thereof the next。 Home by coach with Sir D。 Gauden察who by the way tells me how the City do go on in several things towards the building of the public places察which I am glad to hear察and gives hope that in a few years it will be
