indeed。 Twenty against one they fought察and yet Theseus beat them all察

and those who were left fled down into the town察where the people set

on them察and drove them out察 till Theseus was left alone in the palace察

with AEgeus his new´found father。 But before nightfall all the town

came up察 with victims察 and dances察 and songs察 and they offered

sacrifices to Athene察and rejoiced all the night long察 because their king

had found a noble son察and an heir to his royal house。

So Theseus stayed with his father all the winter此 and when the

spring equinox drew near察 all the Athenians grew sad and silent察 and

Theseus saw it察 and asked the reason察but no one would answer him a

word。

Then he went to his father察 and asked him此 but AEgeus turned

away his face and wept。

'Do not ask察my son察beforehand察about evils which must happen此 it

is enough to have to face them when they come。'

And when the spring equinox came察 a herald came to Athens察 and

stood in the market察and cried察'O people and King of Athens察where is

your yearly tribute' Then a great lamentation arose throughout the city。

But Theseus stood up to the herald察and cried ´

'And who are you察 dog´faced察 who dare demand tribute here拭 If I

did not reverence your herald's staff察I would brain you with this club。'

And the herald answered proudly察 for he was a grave and ancient

man ´

'Fair youth察I am not dog´faced or shameless察but I do my master's

bidding察Minos察the King of hundred´citied Crete察 the wisest of all kings

on earth。 And you must be surely a stranger here察or you would know

why I come察and that I come by right。'

     'I am a stranger here。 Tell me察then察why you come。'

'To fetch the tribute which King AEgeus promised to Minos察 and

confirmed his promise with an oath。 For Minos conquered all this land察

and Megara which lies to the east察when he came hither with a great fleet

of ships察enraged about the murder of his son。 For his son Androgeos

came hither to the Panathenaic games察 and overcame all the Greeks in

the sports察 so that the people honoured him as a hero。 But when

AEgeus saw his valour察 he envied him察 and feared lest he should join

the sons of Pallas察and take away the sceptre from him。 So he plotted

against his life察 and slew him basely察 no man knows how or where。

Some say that he waylaid him by Oinoe察 on the road which goes to

Thebes察and some that he sent him against the bull of Marathon察that the

beast might kill him。 But AEgeus says that the young men killed him

from envy察 because he had conquered them in the games。 So Minos

came hither and avenged him察and would not depart till this land had

promised him tribute ´ seven youths and seven maidens every year察who

go with me in a black´sailed ship察till they come to hundred´citied Crete。'

And Theseus ground his teeth together察 and said察 'Wert thou not a

herald I would kill thee for saying such things of my father察but I will go

to him察and know the truth。' So he went to his father察and asked him察

but he turned away his head and wept察and said察'Blood was shed in the

land unjustly察 and by blood it is avenged。 Break not my heart by

questions察it is enough to endure in silence。'

Then Theseus groaned inwardly察 and said察 'I will go myself with

these youths and maidens察and kill Minos upon his royal throne。'

And AEgeus shrieked察and cried察'You shall not go察my son察 the light

of my old age察to whom alone I look to rule this people after I am dead

and gone。 You shall not go察 to die horribly察 as those youths and

maidens die察 for Minos thrusts them into a labyrinth察 which Daidalos

made for him among the rocks察 Daidalos the renegade察 the accursed察

horribly察and they never see this land again。'

Then Theseus grew red察and his ears tingled察and his heart beat loud

in his bosom。 And he stood awhile like a tall stone pillar on the cliffs

above some hero's grave察and at last he spoke ´

'Therefore all the more I will go with them察 and slay the accursed

stay me。'

'But how will you slay him察my son拭 For you must leave your club

and your armour behind察 and be cast to the monster察 defenceless and

naked like the rest。'

And Theseus said察'Are there no stones in that labyrinth察and have I

not fists and teeth拭 Did I need my club to kill Kerkuon察the terror of all

mortal men'

Then AEgeus clung to his knees察but he would not hear察and at last

he let him go察weeping bitterly察and said only this one word ´

'Promise me but this察if you return in peace察though that may hardly

be此 take down the black sail of the ship for I shall watch for it all day

upon the cliffs察and hoist instead a white sail察that I may know afar off

that you are safe。'

And Theseus promised察and went out察and to the market´place where

the herald stood察while they drew lots for the youths and maidens察who

were to sail in that doleful crew。 And the people stood wailing and

weeping察as the lot fell on this one and on that察but Theseus strode into

the midst察and cried ´ 'Here is a youth who needs no lot。 I myself will

be one of the seven。'

And the herald asked in wonder察'Fair youth察know you whither you

are going'

And Theseus said察'I know。 Let us go down to the black´ sailed ship。'

So they went down to the black´sailed ship察 seven maidens察 and

seven youths察 and Theseus before them all察 and the people following

comforted a little察but they wept as they went on board察and the cliffs of

Sunium rang察 and all the isles of the AEgean Sea察 with the voice of

their lamentation察as they sailed on toward their deaths in Crete。
