singed not a hair of his head察and the bulls stopped short and trembled

when Medeia began her spell。

Then Jason sprang upon the nearest and seized him by the horn察and

up and down they wrestled察till the bull fell grovelling on his knees察for

the heart of the brute died within him察and his mighty limbs were loosed察

beneath the steadfast eye of that dark witch´maiden and the magic

whisper of her lips。

So both the bulls were tamed and yoked察and Jason bound them to

the plough察and goaded them onward with his lance till he had ploughed

the sacred field。

And all the Minuai shouted察but Aietes bit his lips with rage察for the

half of Jason's work was over察and the sun was yet high in heaven。

Then he took the serpents' teeth and sowed them察 and waited what

would befall。 But Medeia looked at him and at his helmet察 lest he

should forget the lesson she had taught。

And every furrow heaved and bubbled察and out of every clod arose a

man。 Out of the earth they rose by thousands察each clad from head to

foot in steel察and drew their swords and rushed on Jason察where he stood

in the midst alone。

Then the Minuai grew pale with fear for him察but Aietes laughed a

bitter laugh。 'See if I had not warriors enough already round me察 I

could call them out of the bosom of the earth。'

But Jason snatched off his helmet察and hurled it into the thickest of

the throng。 And blind madness came upon them察 suspicion察hate察and

fear察 and one cried to his fellow察 'Thou didst strike me' and another察

'Thou art Jason察 thou shalt die' So fury seized those earth´born

phantoms察and each turned his hand against the rest察and they fought and

were never weary察 till they all lay dead upon the ground。 Then the

magic furrows opened察 and the kind earth took them home into her

breast and the grass grew up all green again above them察 and Jason's

work was done。

Then the Minuai rose and shouted察till Prometheus heard them from

his crag。 And Jason cried察'Lead me to the fleece this moment察before

the sun goes down。'

But Aietes thought察 'He has conquered the bulls察 and sown and

reaped the deadly crop。 Who is this who is proof against all magic拭

He may kill the serpent yet。' So he delayed察and sat taking counsel with

his princes till the sun went down and all was dark。 Then he bade a

herald cry察 'Every man to his home for to´night。 To´morrow we will

meet these heroes察and speak about the golden fleece。'

Then he turned and looked at Medeia。 'This is your doing察 false

witch´maid You have helped these yellow´haired strangers察 and

brought shame upon your father and yourself'

Medeia shrank and trembled察and her face grew pale with fear察 and

Aietes knew that she was guilty察and whispered察'If they win the fleece察

you die'

But the Minuai marched toward their ship察 growling like lions

cheated of their prey察for they saw that Aietes meant to mock them察and

to cheat them out of all their toil。 And Oileus said察 'Let us go to the

grove together察and take the fleece by force。'

And Idas the rash cried察'Let us draw lots who shall go in first察for察

while the dragon is devouring one察the rest can slay him and carry off the

fleece in peace。' But Jason held them back察though he praised them察for

he hoped for Medeia's help。

And after awhile Medeia came trembling察 and wept a long while

before she spoke。 And at last ´

'My end is come察and I must die察for my father has found out that I

have helped you。 You he would kill if he dared察but he will not harm

you察 because you have been his guests。 Go then察 go察 and remember

poor Medeia when you are far away across the sea。' But all the heroes

cried ´

'If you die察 we die with you察 for without you we cannot win the

fleece察and home we will not go without it察but fall here fighting to the

last man。'

'You need not die' said Jason。 'Flee home with us across the sea。

Show us first how to win the fleece察for you can do it。 Why else are

you the priestess of the grove拭 Show us but how to win the fleece察and

come with us察and you shall be my queen察and rule over the rich princes

of the Minuai察in Iolcos by the sea。'

And all the heroes pressed round察and vowed to her that she should

be their queen。

Medeia wept察and shuddered察and hid her face in her hands察 for her

heart yearned after her sisters and her playfellows察 and the home where

she was brought up as a child。 But at last she looked up at Jason察and

spoke between her sobs ´

'Must I leave my home and my people察 to wander with strangers

across the sea拭 The lot is cast察and I must endure it。 I will show you

how to win the golden fleece。 Bring up your ship to the wood´side察and

moor her there against the bank察 and let Jason come up at midnight察and

one brave comrade with him察and meet me beneath the wall。'

Then all the heroes cried together察'I will go' 'and I' 'and I' And

Idas the rash grew mad with envy察 for he longed to be foremost in all

things。 But Medeia calmed them察 and said察 'Orpheus shall go with

Jason察and bring his magic harp察 for I hear of him that he is the king of

all minstrels察and can charm all things on earth。'

And Orpheus laughed for joy察 and clapped his hands察 because the

choice had fallen on him察 for in those days poets and singers were as

bold warriors as the best。

So at midnight they went up the bank察and found Medeia察and beside

came Absyrtus her young brother察leading a yearling lamb。

Then Medeia brought them to a thicket beside the War´god's gate察

and there she bade Jason dig a ditch察and kill the lamb察and leave it there察

and strew on it magic herbs and honey from the honeycomb。

Then sprang up through the earth察with the red fire flashing before

her察 Brimo the wild witch´huntress察 while her mad hounds howled

And she leapt into the ditch with her hounds察 and they ate and drank

their fill察 while Jason and Orpheus trembled察and Medeia hid her eyes。

And at last the witch´queen vanished察and fled with her hounds into the

the gleam of the golden fleece察until they saw it hanging on one vast tree

in the midst。 And Jason would have sprung to seize it察 but Medeia

held him back察and pointed察shuddering察to the tree´ foot察where the mighty

serpent lay察 coiled in and out among the roots察 with a body like a

bronze and gold察and half of him they could see察but no more察fo
