will be察but short´lived察and die in the flower of youth。'
So Tiphys the helmsman steered them to the shore under the crags of
Pelion察 and they went up through the dark pine´ forests towards the
Centaur's cave。
And they came into the misty hall察beneath the snow´crowned crag察
and saw the great Centaur lying察 with his huge limbs spread upon the
rock察 and beside him stood Achilles察 the child whom no steel could
wound察and played upon his harp right sweetly察while Cheiron watched
and smiled。
Then Cheiron leapt up and welcomed them察and kissed them every
one察and set a feast before them of swine's flesh察and venison察and good
wine察 and young Achilles served them察 and carried the golden goblet
round。 And after supper all the heroes clapped their hands察and called
on Orpheus to sing察 but he refused察 and said察 'How can I察 who am the
younger察 sing before our ancient host' So they called on Cheiron to
sing察and Achilles brought him his harp察and he began a wondrous song察
a famous story of old time察 of the fight between the Centaurs and the
Lapithai察which you may still see carved in stone。 1 He sang how his
brothers came to ruin by their folly察when they were mad with wine察and
how they and the heroes fought察with fists察and teeth察and the goblets
from which they drank察and how they tore up the pine´ trees in their fury察
and hurled great crags of stone察while the mountains thundered with the
battle察and the land was wasted far and wide察till the Lapithai drove them
from their home in the rich Thessalian plains to the lonely glens of
Pindus察 leaving Cheiron all alone。 And the heroes praised his song
right heartily察for some of them had helped in that great fight。
Then Orpheus took the lyre察and sang of Chaos察and the making of
the wondrous World察and how all things sprang from Love察 who could
not live alone in the Abyss。 And as he sang察 his voice rose from the
cave察 above the crags察 and through the tree´tops察 and the glens of oak
and pine。 And the trees bowed their heads when they heard it察and the

gray rocks cracked and rang察 and the forest beasts crept near to listen察
and the birds forsook their nests and hovered round。 And old Cheiron
claps his hands together察and beat his hoofs upon the ground察for wonder
at that magic song。
Then Peleus kissed his boy察and wept over him察and they went down
to the ship察 and Cheiron came down with them察 weeping察 and kissed
them one by one察and blest them察and promised to them great renown。
And the heroes wept when they left him察 till their great hearts could
weep no more察 for he was kind and just and pious察 and wiser than all
beasts and men。 Then he went up to a cliff察and prayed for them察that
they might come home safe and well察while the heroes rowed away察and
watched him standing on his cliff above the sea察 with his great hands
raised toward heaven察and his white locks waving in the wind察and they
strained their eyes to watch him to the last察for they felt that they should
look on him no more。
So they rowed on over the long swell of the sea察past Olympus察the
seat of the Immortals察 and past the wooded bays of Athos察 and
Samothrace the sacred isle察 and they came past Lemnos to the
Hellespont察and through the narrow strait of Abydos察and so on into the
Propontis察 which we call Marmora now。 And there they met with
Cyzicus察ruling in Asia over the Dolions察who察the songs say察was the son
of AEneas察of whom you will hear many a tale some day。 For Homer
tells us how he fought at Troy察 and Virgil how he sailed away and
founded Rome察and men believed until late years that from him sprang
our old British kings。 Now Cyzicus察 the songs say察 welcomed the
heroes察 for his father had been one of Cheiron's scholars察 so he
welcomed them察and feasted them察 and stored their ship with corn and
wine察and cloaks and rugs察the songs say察and shirts察of which no doubt
they stood in need。
But at night察 while they lay sleeping察 came down on them terrible
men察who lived with the bears in the mountains察like Titans or giants in
shape察for each of them had six arms察and they fought with young firs
and pines。 But Heracles killed them all before morn with his deadly
poisoned arrows察but among them察in the darkness察he slew Cyzicus the

kindly prince。
Then they got to their ship and to their oars察and Tiphys bade them
cast off the hawsers and go to sea。 But as he spoke a whirlwind came察
and spun the ARGO round察and twisted the hawsers together察so that no
man could loose them。 Then Tiphys dropped the rudder from his hand察
and cried察'This comes from the Gods above。' But Jason went forward察
and asked counsel of the magic bough。
Then the magic bough spoke察 and answered察 'This is because you
have slain Cyzicus your friend。 You must appease his soul察or you will
never leave this shore。'
Jason went back sadly察and told the heroes what he had heard。 And
they leapt on shore察and searched till dawn察and at dawn they found the
body察all rolled in dust and blood察among the corpses of those monstrous
beasts。 And they wept over their kind host察and laid him on a fair bed察
and heaped a huge mound over him察and offered black sheep at his tomb察
and Orpheus sang a magic song to him察that his spirit might have rest。
And then they held games at the tomb察after the custom of those times察
and Jason gave prizes to each winner。 To Ancaeus he gave a golden
cup察for he wrestled best of all察 and to Heracles a silver one察for he was
the strongest of all察 and to Castor察 who rode best察 a golden crest察 and
Polydeuces the boxer had a rich carpet察and to Orpheus for his song a
sandal with golden wings。 But Jason himself was the best of all the
archers察and the Minuai crowned him with an olive crown察and so察the
songs say察the soul of good Cyzicus was appeased and the heroes went
on their way in peace。
But when Cyzicus' wife heard that he was dead she died likewise of
grief察 and her tears became a fountain of clear water察 which flows the
whole year round。
Then they rowed away察the songs say察along the Mysian shore察 and
past the mouth of Rhindacus察till they found a pleasant bay察sheltered by
the long ridges of Arganthus察 and by high walls of basalt rock。 And
there they ran the ship ashore upon the yellow sand察and furled the sail察
and took the mast down察and lashed it in its crutch。 And next they let
down the ladder察and went ashore to sport and rest。

And there Heracles went away into the woods察bow in hand察to hunt
wild deer察and Hylas the fair boy slipt away after him察 and followed him
by stealth察until he lost himself among the glens察and sat down weary to
rest himself by the side of a lake察and there the water nymphs came up to
look at him察and loved him察and carried him down under the lake to be
their playfellow察for ever happy and young。
