  CREON

    No more察indeed察having that察I have all。

  ANTIGONE

Why then dost thou delay拭In thy discourse there is nought that

pleases me察never may there be and so my words must needs be

unpleasing to thee。 And yet察for glory´whence could I have won a

nobler察than by giving burial to mine own brother拭All here would

own that they thought it well察were not their lips sealed by fear。 But

royalty察blest in so much besides察hath the power to do and say what

it will。

  CREON

Thou differest from all these Thebans in that view。

  ANTIGONE

These also share it察but they curb their tongues for thee。

  CREON

And art thou not ashamed to act apart from them

  ANTIGONE

No察there is nothing shameful in piety to a brother。

  CREON

Was it not a brother察too察that died in the opposite cause

  ANTIGONE

Brother by the same mother and the same sire。

  CREON

Why察then察dost thou render a grace that is impious in his sight

  ANTIGONE

The dead man will not say that he so deems it。

  CREON

Yea察if thou makest him but equal in honour with the wicked。

  ANTIGONE

It was his brother察not his slave察that perished。

  CREON

Wasting this land察while he fell as its champion。

  ANTIGONE

    Nevertheless察Hades desires these rites。

  CREON

But the good desires not a like portion with the evil。

  ANTIGONE

Who knows but this seems blameless in the world below

  CREON

    A foe is never a friend´not even in death。

  ANTIGONE

Tis not my nature to join in hating察but in loving。

  CREON

Pass察then察to the world of the dead察and察it thou must needs

love察love them。 While I live察no woman shall rule me。

Enter ISMENE from the house察led in by two attendants。

  CHORUS chanting

Lo察yonder Ismene comes forth察shedding such tears as fond sisters

weep察a cloud upon her brow casts its shadow over her

darkly´flushing face察and breaks in rain on her fair cheek。

  CREON

And thou察who察lurking like a viper in my house察wast secretly

draining my life´blood察while I knew not that I was nurturing two

pests察to rise against my throne´come察tell me now察wilt thou also

confess thy part in this burial察or wilt thou forswear all knowledge

of it

  ISMENE

I have done the deed察if she allows my claim察and share the burden

of the charge。

  ANTIGONE

Nay察justice will not suffer thee to do that此thou didst not

consent to the deed察nor did I give thee part in it。

 ISMENE

But察now that ills beset thee察I am not ashamed to sail the sea of

trouble at thy side。

  ANTIGONE

Whose was the deed察Hades and the dead are witnesses此a friend

in words is not the friend that I love。

  ISMENE

Nay察sister察reject me not察but let me die with thee察and duly

honour the dead。

  ANTIGONE

Share not thou my death察nor claim deeds to which thou hast not

put thy hand此my death will suffice。

  ISMENE

And what life is dear to me察bereft of thee

  ANTIGONE

Ask Creon察all thy care is for him。

  ISMENE

Why vex me thus察when it avails thee nought

  ANTIGONE

    Indeed察if I mock察'tis with pain that I mock thee。

  ISMENE

Tell me察how can I serve thee察even now

  ANTIGONE

Save thyself此I grudge not thy escape。

  ISMENE

Ah察woe is me And shall I have no share in thy fate

  ANTIGONE

Thy choice was to live察mine察to die。

  ISMENE

At least thy choice was not made without my protest。

  ANTIGONE

    One world approved thy wisdom察another察mine。

  ISMENE

Howbeit察the offence is the same for both of us。

  ANTIGONE

Be of good cheer察thou livest察but my life hath long been given to

death察that so I might serve the dead。

  CREON

Lo察one of these maidens hath newly shown herself foolish察as

the other hath been since her life began。

  ISMENE

Yea察O king察such reason as nature may have given abides not

with the unfortunate察but goes astray。

  CREON

Thine did察when thou chosest vile deeds with the vile。

  ISMENE

What life could I endure察without her presence

  CREON

Nay察speak not of her 'presence'察she lives no more。

  ISMENE

But wilt thou slay the betrothed of thine own son

  CREON

Nay察there are other fields for him to plough。

  ISMENE

But there can never be such love as bound him to her。

  CREON

I like not an evil wife for my son。

  ANTIGONE

Haemon察beloved How thy father wrongs thee

  CREON

Enough察enough of thee and of thy marriage

  LEADER OF THE CHORUS

Wilt thou indeed rob thy son of this maiden

  CREON

'Tis Death that shall stay these bridals for me。

  LEADER

'Tis determined察it seems察that she shall die。

  CREON

Determined察yes察for thee and for me。´To the two attendants No

more delay´servants察take them within Henceforth they must be

women察and not range at large察for verily even the bold seek to fly

when they see Death now closing on their life。

Exeunt attendants察guarding ANTIGONE and ISMENE。´CREON remains。

  CHORUS singing

                                                            strophe 1

Blest are they whose days have not tasted of evil。 For when a

house hath once been shaken from heaven察there the curse fails

nevermore察passing from life to life of the race察even as察when the

surge is driven over the darkness of the deep by the fierce breath

of Thracian sea´winds察it rolls up the black sand from the depths察and

there is sullen roar from wind´vexed headlands that front the blows of

the storm。

                                                        antistrophe 1

I see that from olden time the sorrows in the house of the

Labdacidae are heaped upon the sorrows of the dead察and generation

is not freed by generation察but some god strikes them down察and the

race hath no deliverance。

For now that hope of which the light had been spread above the

last root of the house of Oedipus´that hope察in turn察is brought

lowby the blood´stained dust due to the gods infernal察and by

folly in speech察and frenzy at the heart。

                                                            strophe 2

Thy power察O Zeus察what human trespass can limit拭That power which

neither Sleep察the all´ensnaring察nor the untiring months of the

gods can master察but thou察a ruler to whom time brings not old age

dwellest in the dazzling splendour of Olympus。

And through the future察near and far察as through the past察shall

this law hold good此Nothing that is vast enters into the life of

mortals without a curse。

                                                        antistrophe 2

For that hope whose wanderings are so wide is to many men a

comfort察but to many a false lure of giddy desires察and the

disappointment comes on one who knoweth nought till he burn his foot

against the hot fire。

For with wisdom hath some one given forth the famous saying

that evil seems good察soon or late察to him whose mind the god draws to

mischief察and but for the briefest space doth he fare free of woe。

  LEADER OF THE CHORUS

But lo察Haemon察the last of thy sons察Comes he grieving for the

doom of his promised bride察Antigone察and bitter for the baffled

hope of his marriage

                                                       Enter HAEMON

  CREON

We shall know soon察better than seers could tell us。´My son

hearing the fixed doom of thy betrothed察art thou come in rage against

thy father拭Or have I thy good will察act how I may

  HAEMON

Father察I am thine察and thou察in thy wisdom察tracest for me

rules which I shall follow。 No marriage shall be deemed by me a

greater gain than thy good guidance。

  CREON

Yea察this察my son察should be thy heart's fixed law察in all

things to obey thy father's will。 'Tis for this that men pray to see

dutiful children grow up around them in their homes察that such may

requite their father's foe with evil察and honour察as their father

doth察his friend。 But he who begets unprofitable children´what shall

we say that he hath sown察but troubles for himself察and much triumph

for his foes拭Then do not thou察my son察at pleasure's beck察dethrone

thy reason for a woman's sake察knowing that this is a joy that soon

grows cold in clasping arms察an evil woman to share thy bed and thy

home。 For what wound could strike deeper than a false friend拭Nay

with loathing察and as if she were thine enemy察let this girl go to

find a husband in the house of Hades。 For since I have taken her

alone of all the city察in open disobedience察I will not make myself

a liar to my people´I will slay her。

So let her appeal as she will to the majesty of kindred blood。

If I am to nurture mine own kindred in naughtiness察needs must I

bear with it in aliens。 He who does his duty in his own househo
