where he drank his sou's worth of black beer察quite as good as any of the
famous altarpieces for which the stranger folk traveled far and wide into
Flanders from every land on which the good sun shone。
There was only one other beside Patrasche to whom Nello could talk
at all of his daring fantasies。 This other was little Alois察who lived at the
old red mill on the grassy mound察 and whose father察 the miller察 was the
best´to´do husbandman in all the village。 Little Alois was only a pretty
baby with soft round察rosy features察made lovely by those sweet dark eyes
that the Spanish rule has left in so many a Flemish face察in testimony of
the Alvan dominion察 as Spanish art has left broad´sown throughout the
country majestic palaces and stately courts察 gilded house´fronts and
sculptured lintelshistories in blazonry and poems in stone。
Little Alois was often with Nello and Patrasche。 They played in the
fields察they ran in the snow察they gathered the daisies and bilberries察they
went up to the old gray church together察and they often sat together by the
broad wood fire in the mill´house。 Little Alois察 indeed察 was the richest
child in the hamlet。 She had neither brother nor sister察her blue serge dress
had never a hole in it察at kermess she had as many gilded nuts and Agni
Dei in sugar as her hands could hold察and when she went up for her first
communion her flaxen curls were covered with a cap of richest Mechlin
lace察which had been her mother's and her grandmother's before it came to
her。 Men spoke already察though she had but twelve years察of the good wife
she would be for their sons to woo and win察but she herself was a little gay察
simple child察 in no wise conscious of her heritage察 and she loved no
playfellows so well as Jehan Daas's grandson and his dog。
One day her father察 Baas Cogez察 a good man察 but somewhat stern察
came on a pretty group in the long meadow behind the mill察 where the
aftermath had that day been cut。 It was his little daughter sitting amid the
hay察with the great tawny head of Patrasche on her lap察and many wreaths
of poppies and blue corn´flowers round them both察on a clean smooth slab
of pine wood the boy Nello drew their likeness with a stick of charcoal。
The miller stood and looked at the portrait with tears in his eyesit
was so strangely like察and he loved his only child closely and well。 Then
he roughly chid the little girl for idling there while her mother needed her

within察and sent her indoors crying and afraid察then察turning察he snatched
the wood from Nello's hands。 ;Dost do much of such folly拭─he asked察but
there was a tremble in his voice。
Nello coloured and hung his head。 ;I draw everything I see察─ he
murmured。
The miller was silent察then he stretched his hand out with a franc in it。
;It is folly察as I say察and evil waste of time察nevertheless察it is like Alois察
and will please the house´mother。 Take this silver bit for it and leave it for
me。;
The colour died out of the face of the young Ardennois察he lifted his
head and put his hands behind his back。 ;Keep your money and the
portrait both察Baas Cogez察─he said察simply。 ;You have been often good to
me。; Then he called Patrasche to him察and walked away across the fields。
;I could have seen them with that franc察─he murmured to Patrasche察
;but I could not sell her picturenot even for them。;
Baas Cogez went into his mill´house sore troubled in his mind。 ;That
lad must not be so much with Alois察─ he said to his wife that night。
;Trouble may come of it hereafter察he is fifteen now察and she is twelve察
and the boy is comely of face and form。;
;And he is a good lad and a loyal察─said the housewife察 feasting her
eyes on the piece of pine wood where it was throned above the chimney
with a cuckoo clock in oak and a Calvary in wax。
;Yea察I do not gainsay that察─said the miller察draining his pewter flagon。
;Then察if what you think of were ever to come to pass察─said the wife察
hesitatingly察 would it matter so much拭She will have enough for both察and
one cannot be better than happy。;
;You are a woman察 and therefore a fool察─ said the miller察 harshly察
striking his pipe on the table。 ;The lad is naught but a beggar察and察with
these painter's fancies察worse than a beggar。 Have a care that they are not
together in the future察or I will send the child to the surer keeping of the
nuns of the Sacred Heart。;
The poor mother was terrified察 and promised humbly to do his will。
Not that she could bring herself altogether to separate the child from her
favorite playmate察nor did the miller even desire that extreme of cruelty to

a young lad who was guilty of nothing except poverty。 But there were
many ways in which little Alois was kept away from her chosen
companion察 and Nello察 being a boy proud and quiet and sensitive察 was
quickly wounded察and ceased to turn his own steps and those of Patrasche察
as he had been used to do with every moment of leisure察to the old red mill
upon the slope。 What his offence was he did not know察he supposed he had
in some manner angered Baas Cogez by taking the portrait of Alois in the
meadow察and when the child who loved him would run to him and nestle
her hand in his察 he would smile at her very sadly and say with a tender
concern for her before himself察 Nay察Alois察do not anger your father。 He
thinks that I make you idle察dear察and he is not pleased that you should be
with me。 He is a good man and loves you well察 we will not anger him察
Alois。;
But it was with a sad heart that he said it察and the earth did not look so
bright to him as it had used to do when he went out at sunrise under the
poplars down the straight roads with Patrasche。 The old red mill had been
a landmark to him察and he had been used to pause by it察going and coming察
for a cheery greeting with its people as her little flaxen head rose above
the low mill wicket察and her little rosy hands had held out a bone or a crust
to Patrasche。 Now the dog looked wistfully at a closed door察and the boy
went on without pausing察with a pang at his heart察and the child sat within
with tears dropping slowly on the knitting to which she was set on her
little stool by the stove察and Baas Cogez察working among his sacks and his
mill´gear察would harden his will and say to himself察 It is best so。 The lad
is all but a beggar察and full of idle察dreaming fooleries。 Who knows what
mischief might not come of it in the future拭─ So he was wise in his
generation察and would not have the door unbarred察except upon rare and
formal occasions察which seemed to have neither warmth nor mirth in them
to the two children察who had been accustomed so long to a daily gleeful察
careless察happy interchange of greeting察speech察and pastime察with no other
watcher of their sports or auditor of their fancies than Patrasche察 sagely
shaking the brazen bells of his collar and responding with all a dog's swift
sympathies to their every change of mood。
All this while the little panel of pine wood remained over the chimney

in the mill kitchen with the cuckoo clock and the waxen Calvary察 and
sometimes it seemed to Nello a little hard that while his gift was accepted察
he himself should be denied。
But he did not complain察it was his habit to be quiet。 Old Jehan Daas
had said ever to him察 We are poor察we must take what God sendsthe ill
with the good察the poor cannot choose。;
To which the boy had always listened in silence察being reverent of his
old grandfather察 but nevertheless a certain vague察 sweet hope察 such as
beguiles the children of genius察had whispered in his heart察 Yet the poor
do choose sometimeschoose to be great察 so that men cannot say them
nay。; And he thought so still in his innocence察and one day察when the little
